I enjoy writing... especially when I have a passion for the topic. Here’s a collection of recent and past musings, reflections, and white papers.
The leadership team Lululemon recently asked me to share some thoughts over Zoom with their membership group (approx. 7000 strong from Edmonton, Chicago, Denver, and Toronto) connected to a speaker-series focused on internal soul-searching and resilience. Here’s a quick summary of my talk.
A few weeks ago I took a stroll downtown - from my (now basically deserted) shared office space in Manulife to my (now closed forever) favourite Italian café, Al Centro - a few blocks away. Over the course of my walk, I was struck by a feeling of emptiness exasperated by the nearly empty streets (with the exception of a young man who appeared to be entranced with the prospect of stealing a broken down bike locked to a yield sign).
Matt Decore is a beauty. His nickname, “Hardcore” couldn’t be more fitting - after all, he survived 10+ years as a professional cyclist (arguably one of the toughest sports on the planet). Matt has an insatiable thirst for speed, suffering, friendship and adventure - he revels in sharing his passion with anyone willing to jump on a bike, and he has made a mark on organizations like The Stollery Children’s Foundation and CASA - supporting big rides with philanthropists and cyclists from across Canada.
Poundmaker’s Lodge is an addiction and mental-health facility specializing in treatment for Indigenous peoples located just north of Edmonton, Alberta. In 2004, I attended a sweat ceremony there led by Big Futures Inc. with a group of 10 other entrepreneurs looking to up their leadership game through a program called Thunderbirds.
Most of us will have the opportunity to look back on this unprecedented time - I hope we can be proud of how we showed up. This is truly remarkable - and the scope of consequences (personally, professionally and economically) are unpredictable and... unimaginable. Needless to say, if you aren’t feeling anxious (like I am), then I’m concerned about you... and envious.
